Girls' Generation (Hangul: 소녀시대; Hanja: 少女時代; Mandarin Chinese: Shaonü Shidai; Japanese: Shōjō Jidai) is a South Korean nine-member girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2007. Its members include (in order of official announcement) Yoona, Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Taeyeon, Jessica, and Sunny. They are commonly referred to as SNSD, the acronym of the group's Korean name So Nyeo Shi Dae or So Nyuh Shi Dae.

History

Pre-debut

The members were professionally trained primarily in singing and dancing while a select few were also trained in acting and modeling. Many of the members had already made appearances in magazine ads, television commercials, and small television appearances. For nearly two years, Korean websites speculated about which female SM Entertainment trainees would be placed into the group. They were speculated to be called Super Girls after their counterpart Super Junior.

2007: Debut and first album

In July 2007, Girls' Generation had their first performance on Inkigayo. The song the girls performed was called "Into the New World" (Korean: "다시 만난 세계"), which became their first single. A show documenting the girls' debut titled M.Net's Girls Go To School was filmed during this time. The song had a physical release, which included two other songs, "Beginning" and "Perfect for You", which was later renamed to "Honey" for their self-titled debut album Girls' Generation. An instrumental of "Into the New World" was also included. The group began promoting the single soon after its release. Girls' Generation performed their single on SBS's Inkigayo, MBC's Show! Music Core, and on KBS's Music Bank.

After a short break, the group's first full album was released in late autumn 2007, with the lead single "Girls' Generation" (Korean: "소녀시대"), a cover of Lee Seung-Chul's hit. Promotion for the single started in early November. Marked by dance routines and vocals, "Girls' Generation" was a hit for the group, and the album sold 121,143 copies to date, placing 8th in the year-end charts.[1] In early 2008, Girls' Generation began promoting their second single, "Kissing You". The music video featured Donghae from Super Junior. This song achieved the #1 spot on three major TV music rankings—SBS Inkigayo, M.net M.Countdown! and KBS Music Bank.[citation needed]

In March 2008, the album was re-released and re-titled Baby Baby. A third single, "Baby Baby", was used to promote the album. A digital EP featuring Jessica, Tiffany, and Seohyun was released on April 2008, titled Roommate. The single from the mini-album is "Oppa Nappa" ("Korean: 오빠 나빠", literally "Bad Brother", although contextually it refers to an older male friend).

2008–2009: Other activities, return with mini-albums and 1st solo concert

It was announced in autumn 2008 that Girls' Generation would be starring in a reality show on M.net. Titled Factory Girl, the show chronicles the girls working as interns at fashion magazine Elle. The program began airing in early October.[2]

During their absence from the music scene, they appeared in many commercials for MapleStory and Mabinogi.

Girls' Generation, along with fellow artists such as BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, CSJH the Grace, Zhang Liyin, SHINee and other SM artists participated in SM Town Live '08. The tour expanded its route to South Korea, Thailand, and China.

It was then announced that the group's first EP, The First Mini Album — Gee, would be released in January 2009.[3] A teaser video was released in January 2009 and the first single "Gee" released soon after. Interest in the song rose after the digital release,[4] topping Cyworld's hourly music chart on the release day.[5] The song also went #1 on all major digital music charts within two days.[6]

The group began its album promotion on January 2009 on MBC Show! Music Core.[7] They sang their new single, "Gee", and "Him Nae (Way To Go)", another track from Gee. Meanwhile, questions were raised when the group did not appear on KBS's Music Bank with "Gee", even after winning #1 on the music chart show.[8]

"Gee" is the record holder for the longest-running #1 on music portal M.net (for 8 weeks), surpassing the previous record of 6 weeks set by the Wonder Girls' "Nobody".[9][10] They also set a record on KBS's Music Bank by being #1 for 9 consecutive weeks,[11] breaking the record previously set by Jewelry's "One More Time", which had 7 wins.[12] "Gee" also won the "Best-selling Song" award on Music Bank's half-year special, for "Gee". Promotions for the song ended at the end of March.

After a short break, SM Entertainment announced that the girls would be back with a new single and showing a "Marine Girl" concept; the song, titled "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" (Korean: "소원을 말해봐", literally "Tell Me Your Wish"); the mini album was released digitally on June 22, 2009.[13][14] The mini-album, Genie, includes a duet between Jessica and SHINee member Onew called "One Year Later".[15]

The group started performing their new song. On June 26, 2009, Girls' Generation's comeback performance was recorded on KBS's Music Bank.[15] The group then had their return performances on MBC's Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo on June 27 and 28, 2009. Genie was released on June 29, 2009. Their first win for their single "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" was obtained at the July 10, 2009 episode of KBS Music Bank. Their second award was claimed at the July 12, 2009 episode of SBS Inkigayo. The group finished promotions for "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" in August 2009.[citation needed]

SNSD and f(x) at Chocolate Love launch

On October 7, Girls' Generation, along with label-mate f(x), released a digital single named "Chocolate Love" for the 4th edition of the Blacklabel series LG CYON phone, "Chocolate". Girls' Generation sang the "Retro Pop Version" of the song while f(x) sang the "Electronic Pop Version".[citation needed]

In addition to their musical activities, the girls have had various television series, with varied success. On May 3, 2009, Girls' Generation starred in their new reality show Sonyuh Shidae Horror Movie factory, with the premiere episode receiving a viewership rating of 3.3%. The show was then cancelled after 6 episodes due to low ratings.[citation needed] The show was replaced with another Girls' Generation reality program Himnaera-Him! or Cheer Up! in which the girls try to cheer up hardworking people in the midst of an economic slump. The show was canceled after two episodes due to the girls becoming too busy with the release and promotion of their new mini-album, Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie).[citation needed] Since June 23, 2009, the group has been on a reality series titled Girls' Generation's Hello Baby, on cable network KBS Joy, where they take care of a child and experience what motherhood is like. In that show, they take care of a boy named "Cho Kyungsan" (Korean: "조경산"), and each week they (or fathers, male guests who come out time to time) select "The Best Mom" and "the Worst Mom" among the members according to their work for the day. The show ended on November 17, 2009.[citation needed]

In July, selected members, alongside selected Super Junior members, released the song "S.E.O.U.L. Song"[16]. The music video was released as part of South Korea's tourism initiative.

The group also announced its first solo tour, with two Korean dates in December and other Asian locations to follow.[17] The Korean dates sold out in 3 minutes.[18] The concert is titled "Into the New World" after the name of their debut single.

2010: Second album

During their first Asian concert, the girls performed a new song called "Show, Show, Show".[citation needed] In early January 2010, SM Entertainment confirmed that the group will be back in February 2010 with their second full-length album.[citation needed] Also, the girls confirmed that they will be holding their encore concert which will be held on Febuary 27 and 28. The tickets will be on sale from January 21. [19]

Controversies

Silent protest

On June 7 2008, during the 2008 'Dream Concert', a silent protest was held against Girls' Generation by various fanclubs, notably E.L.F. (Super Junior), Cassiopeia (TVXQ), and Triple S (SS501) by turning off their glow stick and remaining silent during the performance.[20]

Marine girl concept

When the cover image for their second EP Genie was released, there was controversy regarding the images used on the cover, specifically the World War II Japanese A6M Zero fighter and a Nazi swastika shaped badge present on the cover. SM Entertainment delayed the EP in order to redo the covers.[21] The EP was released 4 days later.

2NE1 (Korean: 투 애니원; pronounced "to anyone"[1] or "twenty-one"[2]) is a South Korean girl group created by YG Entertainment, the first by the company. First appearing in a Cyon commercial campaign with Big Bang for LG Telecom, their debut single "Fire" was released on May 6, 2009. On May 17, 2009 the group debut with their first single "Fire" on SBS's Inkigayo. The group's name 2NE1 stands for "New Evolution of the 21st Century"[3].

  • History

The group was first mentioned by the press in late 2008, when rumours were spreading that YG was creating a female version of Big Bang named Sista. In response to those rumours, YG Entertainment President Yang Hyun Suk stated that the name was not chosen yet.[4] In January 2009, it was announced that the "Female Big Bang" would debut around July 2009 with three members ; CL, Park Bom, and Minzy.[5] Later that month, YG stated that Sandara joined the group, with one more member to follow.[6] In the end, YG Entertainment announced that the group would consist of four members and debut sometime in May 2009.[7] The company stated that the group had trained for 4 years, and that their debut album would contain songs produced by Teddy Park.[5][6][7] The group's name was initially announced as "21"; however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was quickly renamed "2NE1".[8]

  • 2009: Debut, rise to fame

2NE1's first song was "Lollipop", digitally released on March 27, 2009.[7] The song was created for LG to promote their Cyon phone, and it was a joint release with Big Bang; the commercial/music video debuted on March 28, 2009.[9] Although it was not a promoted single (as it was an advertisement song, there were problems with network chart eligibility[10]), "Lollipop" proved to be a strong chart hit, going to #1 on various online charts[10] and topping music television network M.Net's online chart for four weeks in a row.[11] It was also profiled in Perez Hilton's blog.[12]

On April 30, Yang Hyun-suk revealed that 2NE1's debut song would be a hip-hop/reggae song, and that it would be digitally released on May 6, 2009.[13] Titled "Fire", the song was fully written and produced by 1TYM's Teddy Park.[14] Teasers of the song were released on their official website at the beginning of May, with a 20-second clip released on May 1.[15]

"Fire" was released as planned on May 6, with two versions of the music video — a "space" version and a "street" version — released the same day.[16] The videos received over one million views in a day.[17] The group's first performance of the song was on May 17, 2009, on SBS's Inkigayo,[18] beginning the group's activities.

Both the song and the group have been very popular online, with the song topping M.Net's online chart and the group's name becoming a top search term.[19] The group was also rewarded with three Cyworld Digital Music Awards, with both "Lollipop" and "Fire" winning "Song of the Month" awards and the group winning "Rookie of the Month" for May 2009.[20] They received their first Mutizen award during their fourth stage performance in SBS Inkigayo (Popular Song) on June 14, 2009. They received their second Mutizen award on SBS Inkigayo on June 21, 2009. Along with their awards successes, 2NE1 signed a deal with Fila to become the new models for their commercial campaign 2 days after 2NE1's Mutizen win.[21] 2NE1 performed in the 6th Asia Song Festival in September 2009, alongside Big Bang, Super Junior and Girls' Generation, to represent Korea; the group also received 2009's "Asian Newcomer's Award." [22] On July 1, the group released the title of a song out of their first mini-album called "I Don't Care" online. After its digital release, interest in the song rose greatly, topping Cyworld's hourly music chart after an hour of its release.[citation needed] On its first day, it recorded 50,000 sales in pre-orders.[citation needed] Their debut was a success on the Korean charts, as it heads straight to number 1 for its week - as it sold 13,675 albums.[citation needed] YG also stated that it already reached the 80,000 sales mark within 2 weeks which is impressive since 2NE1 is only a rookie.[citation needed] On August 2, 2009, 2NE1 performed a live remix version of "I Don't Care" at Popular Song. "I Don't Care" was also profiled in Perez Hilton's blog.[23]. The group ended promotions for "I Don't Care" on August 30, 2009 in SBS Inkigayo with an unplugged version of the song. 2NE1 began promotion for "Pretty Boy" on September 6, 2009 with a performance at SBS Inkigayo and another performance at MusicBank on September 11, 2009. The group ended their promotions for their mini album on September 13, 2009 with a performance of "In The Club" at their good bye stage. They then performed "Let's Go Party" along with "Fire", "How Gee", and "Last Farewell" (w/Big Bang) at the SBS Idol Big Show Chuseok Special.[citation needed]

  • Controversy

YG Entertainment was accused of plagiarism by Sony ATV, for 2NE1's second single song "I Don't Care" which allegedly sounded similar to Lionel Richie's "Just Go" [24]. It was stated that officials from Sony reportedly sent YG Entertainment warning letters about plagiarism but Teddy, who composed "I Don't Care", denied the claims and no further actions have been taken.

3G is Third-Generation Technology

  1. Generasi pertama: analog, kecepatan rendah (low-speed), cukup untuk suara. Contoh: NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) dan AMPS (Analog Mobile Phone System)
  2. Generasi kedua: digital, kecepatan rendah - menengah. Contoh: GSM dan CDMA2000 1xRTT
  3. Generasi ketiga: digital, kecepatan tinggi (high-speed), untuk pita lebar (broadband). Contoh: W-CDMA (atau dikenal juga dengan UMTS) dan CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.

>>Definisi

SS501 (pronounced as Double S Oh Gong Il in Korea) is a South Korean boyband under management of Daesung Entertainment, also known as DSP Entertainment. The name of the band is a combination of the alphabet and numbers that have special meanings in them. The first “S” stands for “Super”. The second “S” is an abbreviation for "Star". The number 5,0 and 1 means "five members united as one forever". Their official fan club is known as "Triple S".

  • History

2005-2006: Debut

SS501 debuted on June 8, 2005 with their first single "Kyeonggo" (Korean: "경고", "Warning"), with a second single "Snow Prince" released in late 2005. The group was inactive in Korea for most of 2006, although they had a fan meeting in Japan in April.[citation needed] The hiatus was due to Heo Young Saeng's throat condition which required surgery, thus resulting in a need for time to fully recover.[citation needed]. In mid-2006, they held their first concert, "Step Up Concert" in Osaka, Japan. In late 2006, they returned to Korea in order to promote their first full album, which was released on November 10 and titled S.T.01 Now. Singles from the album included "Unlock" and "Four Chance". As well as promoting the album on various variety and music shows, they also filmed a show on MNet called SOS. The group also lent their voices for the 2006 animated movie Pie Story.

2007-2008: Japanese activities, 'Boys Over Flowers' and 'Bad Girl Diary'

Later in 2007, the group debuted in the Japanese market. A Japanese fan club has been established with the name of "Triple S Japan"; it officially debuted on March 25, 2007, when SS501 had their first official meeting with the group. The group released their Japanese single "Kokoro", alongside multiple versions, including one with all members and five others featuring the members individually. The single debuted at #5 on the Oricon chart, and move to #3 the next day. A full album was released later in the year.

In 2008, SS501 returned to Korea with their single Deja Vu released on March 8, 2008. The title track was the first song to be promoted, and they started their comeback on music channel M.Net's M Countdow. After success with their single "Deja Vu", they began to promote their second single, "A Song Calling For You". They performed their Goodbye Stage on Music Bank on June 6, 2008, to return to Japanese activities.

On October 2, 2008, an official announcement confirmed that leader Kim Hyun Joong was part of the cast for the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango, officially named Boys Over Flowers. It was broadcast on KBS in the first half of 2009, with a total of 25 episodes and a few special episodes.

With both Park Jung Min (Danny Park on the musical Grease) and Kim Hyun Joong on solo activities, the next SS501 album was pushed back to July 2009. As such, the other three members released a project album named U R Man in November 2008. The first single released was "U R Man". They also promoted their single for the Boys Over Flowers soundtrack, "Nae Meoriga Nabbaseo" (Korean: "내 머리가 나빠서", "Because I'm Stupid"). Due to the success of the drama, the song had a high number of downloads.

2009: Solo collection, second mini album and first Asian tour

They released their official second Japanese album on May 13, 2009 titled All My Love and had a promotional tour in Japan in support of the album. The group also released their Solo Collection, consisting of the individual members' songs.

After concentrating on their individual activities, the group made a comeback and released their second mini album titled Rebirth, with the limited edition being released on October 20, 2009and the normal edition on 22 October. The limited special edition album included two posters and a 100 page photo diary. Their comeback song "Love Like This" was well received, winning two Music Bank awards and one Inkigayo Mutizen in November. The group ended promotions for the album on November 29, 2009.

On August 1, 2009, the group started their first Asia tour, visiting Seoul, Tokyo, Taiwan, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The group will hold a concert in Thailand in Februray 2010, before holding another concert in Seoul (February 2010) to conclude the tour.

  • Artistry

Although most of their music is composed by various people, the members of SS501 have also contributed to their albums. Lyrics for "If I Cannot" (Jung Min solo) is written by Jung Min himself, as well as the lyrics for "Only Me?", another one of his solo songs. Lyrics of "Obsess", the fourth track of their mini album Rebirth was written by Hyung Joon and his brother, Kim Ki Bum (under the name H&B). Lyrics of "Green Peas", fifth track of Rebirth was written by all the members together. Park Jung Min also produced label-mate Rainbow's song "Kiss".
